Midweek Cinema: Johnny Guitar

on BBC Two England

Starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden
with Scott Brady, Mercedes McCambridge, Ward Bond

Joan Crawford plays Vienna, owner of a gambling house and the sworn enemy of the equally formidable local ranchers' leader - Emma Small. In this unusual, atmospheric Western, probably the first to strike a blow for Women's Lib, the two larger-than-life female characters dominate the action. Even the two tough men in Vienna's life, Johnny Guitar and the Dancin' Kid leave the centre of the stage to the women.
