James Purvis is the oldest ships' pilot on the River Tyne. Son of a pilot, grandson of a pilot, he is proud of a piloting pedigree which began more than 300 years ago in the days when the Tyne was one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. Today the port is changing fast, but men who know the river as well as Jimmy does are still essential.

"I know that you wish to remain neutral - but I can assure you that the Great Powers will not allow it." (Stalin to the Finns: 1939)

Finland made an unforgettable impression on the rest of the world in the Winter War of 1939-40 with white-clad ski troops skirmishing through the pine forests against Russian armoured columns.

But that war is just part of the extraordinary and unexpected story of Finland. Chronicle, using much material never before seen in Britain, tells how this small country of only 4.1 million people came into being and how, against all odds and terrible dangers, it has survived to this day.
