James Purvis is the oldest ships' pilot on the River Tyne. Son of a pilot, grandson of a pilot, he is proud of a piloting pedigree which began more than 300 years ago in the days when the Tyne was one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. Today the port is changing fast, but men who know the river as well as Jimmy does are still essential.
