Shetland is as far north as Britain goes, a group of islands nearer to Bergen than Aberdeen. In summer the sun disappears only briefly leaving a pink midnight twilight, the 'simmer dim.'
Shetlanders like Bobby Tulloch, above, are proud of their Norse connections, and care greatly about the Arctic wildlife which shares their harsh environment: the famous nesting snowy owls, piratical skuas, rare whimbrels. They are concerned that the peace and purity of their islands should not be destroyed by drilling for new oil off their shores.
