The Royal Institution, London Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People by Professor Charles Taylor
Ping! Thud! Blah! Each day we are surrounded by sounds like this - and more. But are they noise - or music? Can science find the answer? The sounds made by pipes, strings, voices, machines and instruments are varied in their complexity and effects.
Professor Taylor can best be described as an enthusiast who believes that to make science more easily understood and enjoyed teachers should apply 'showbiz' technique to their lectures. (He does.) He will gladly play Bach's Air on a G String or 'Daisy, Daisy.'
With the audience's help he makes different sounds and scientifically explores their qualities.
