A comic opera by William Walton

In "The Bear", Chekhov's most popular and successful farce, Madame Popova's elaborate grief for her dead husband is rudely interrupted by the visit of a creditor, who stays to demand rather more than his money. This musical version has the additional fun of William Walton's tunes, many written as operatic parodies.

Adapted by Patrick Garland from the works of John Aubrey
With Roy Dotrice as John Aubrey

Brief Lives, shown on television both here and in the States, and produced on the stage in both countries, has become a classic. Roy Dotrice won the 'Actor of the Year' award for his portrayal of John Aubrey, the 17th-century diarist, whose reminiscences in his cluttered room make up this remarkable solo performance - outrageous, hilarious, touching and totally convincing - one has the feeling that this is John Aubrey himself talking across the centuries.
