with Freddie Jones as Oscar Wilde and Wolfe Morris as Leonard Smithers
The Naughty 90s - the Yellow 90s... when Oscar Wilde held court in the Cafe Royal and Aubrey Beardsley shocked the respectable with 'decadent' drawings.
The fin-de-siecle men were a tiny minority among the bustling, confident Victorians, but they left an indelible mark on an extraordinary decade. Arthur Symons, the critic (played here by John Wood) wrote of them 'They accomplished the final overthrow of the complacency that had blinded Victorian eyes to the atrophy beneath the riches they were accumulating.'
More pithily Wilde said 'We're all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.'
(David Wood is in 'After Haggerty' at the Criterion Theatre, London)

with Geraldine Fitzgerald, Tom Tully

The well-liked and prosperous Chapin family is dominated by Edith Chapin, whose ambitions force her husband Joe into shady political dealings and gradually undermines the whole family.

In this adaptation of John O'Hara's novel, Gary Cooper, so often the man of action, here plays the disillusioned Joe who towards the end of his life finds a brief happiness with his daughter's friend Kate.
