The Royal Institution, London Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People by Dr John Napier

The origin of man's ancestors goes back 65 million years, but it was a long time before human beings appeared. If we compress this development into one year, then it was not until 8.15 pm on 31 December that Evolution's door opened on modern Man.
Information about this comes from the structure of the earth's surface and from fossils. Since our earliest ancestors lived in trees, Dr Napier uses his version of Man's Family Tree to demonstrate the characteristics of animals which have made it their home.

The High-Hole-In at St Andrews: 170 yards, par 3. 'Hardest short hole in the world,' say some... 'Trouble once begun may not end till the card be torn into... fragments.' wrote Bernard Darwin.
The 15th at Royal Birkdale: 536 Yards, par 5. Fifteen bunkers and into the wind... not the longest in Britain, but it often plays so. The 6th at Carnoustie: 565 yards, par 5. ' A hole to dream about,' wrote Patric Dickinson, 'an epic in itself' ... one of Britain's longest championship holes...
...and the shortest of them all: The 'Postage Stamp' at Troon: 125 yards, par 3... but one man took 15 in an Open!
