The World Through European Eyes

The scene: a hospital ward somewhere in London. The atmosphere peaceful and happy. The patients quiet and content. Some sit - some lie in bed. They are not in pain. They are alert and they are alive. But they are ill, in fact fatally ill. A profoundly moving documentary film from Holland explores a world where death is not feared - a world in which both the very old and the very ill face death objectively and serenely.

"I am English, I was German. But above all I was there."

In 1934 Christabel Burton, niece of Lord Northcliffe, married Peter Bielenburg, a Hamburg law student and spent the next eleven years in Germany. In this Line-Up film on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, Christabel Bielenburg vividly recalls some of her experiences during this time when her loyalties were divided.
