Religion is in turmoil and men turn to darker gods. On the Scottish border witchcraft is rife. So when a neighbour's cattle catch plague, accusing fingers point-and a charge is laid against Gavin's younger sister, the child Grizel. Cessford has to try her, little knowing how hard it is to make the charge of witchcraft stick.

Robot R.B. 34, straight off the assembly line, is to be demonstrated to the Press to quieten public apprehension about possible danger from the growing number of robots. But R.B. 34 has a fault. It is telepathic: somehow it has been programmed to read minds, secret schemes, desires, and all. And who - even in a robot factory - is without his secrets?

This week and every week television in this country brings us the stories and issues that concern us-the argument, the evidence, the examination. We listen and we watch-sometimes we switch off or over-and then we make up our minds. But nearly all the coverage is seen through our eyes. Elsewhere the same process goes on-but there the view may be quite different.

This week the Commonwealth Prime Ministers have met to discuss their future. If Biafra is the powder, Canada may well prove to be the fuse. Tonight in Europa Canadian television answers the question-how important is the Commonwealth today? And Europa asks the question-does Britain's future in fact lie in Europe?
