The Royal Institution, London Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People
by Professor Philip Morrison

So far we have used only the arithmetic of ratio and we know that Gulliver was twelve times bigger than his Lilliputian hosts. In considering numbers in life we discover that words can be produced by drawing lots, taking us far into nature and language.

Accused of murdering an Englishman when he led his men across the border in search of Agnes, Gavin must stand trial at the next Day of Truce - when the opposing Wardens meet together to settle their outstanding quarrels. Gavin can be saved if he'll sign a bond making him Cessford's man. But Gavin would rather lose his life than his independence, and as things are he might have to.

The 1969 New Year's Honours List once again stamped official and royal recognition on those of us who have given outstanding service. The awards embrace all the British people, from politicians and ambassadors to village postmen and road safety wardens. But how do the great mass of us both here and abroad who will never be honoured regard the baronetcies, the knighthoods, the medals?
Tonight Europa looks at the aspects of pomp and circumstance through European eyes - with a special report from French Television on the investiture this summer of the Prince of Wales.
