Petroc Trelawney introduces a new Opera North production of Handel's great operatic masterpiece Radamisto live from the Grand Theatre, Leeds. The success of this work in April 1720 established Handel as the leading composer of Italian opera seria and London as the opera capital of Europe - at least for a few years. Handel's heroic drama of infidelity, jealousy, political intrigue and war is presented in a new English translation by Tim Kopkins.
Radamisto is a tense drama of love in a time of war, in which desire drives a man to besiege a city in orderto capture the woman he loves, and a woman remains faithful to her husband even in the face of death.
Handel's music is byturns achingly beautiful and dazzlingly brilliant. The elegant melodies both convey and contain the powerful emotions of the story.
