Benny Goodman. Julian Joseph profiles major jazz artists with performances from the BBCjazz archives. This week he focuses on clarinet virtuoso and band leader Benny Goodman , once dubbed the King of Swing. In excerpts from an interview he gave in 1973, Goodman recalls his first recording date in 1928 and the celebrated Carnegie Hall concert ten years later. Last weekend's event had a Japanese focus and featured Toshimam Nakamura. a key figure in Tokyo's underground "onkyo" scene, who uses only feedback to carve elaborate slabs of sound. Plus a project for trio and trashed electronics by Lee Ranaldo of art-rockers Sonic Youth, and the musical assemblages of Canadian turntable artist Martin Tetreault.
