Mayfair was wearing kimonos and performing tea ceremonies, and the islands of Japan were the fashionable decorating theme. Even WS Gilbert bought an ornamental sword, and when one day it crashed down off the wall of his study, he knew it was time to write a Japanese operetta.

This fourth programme features the fantasy based on Schubert's love song Sei Mir Gegrusst , a choral setting of Goethe's contemplation of water as the medium linking heaven and earth in the eternal cycle of nature, and a village comedy of errors about identical twin brothers who return from 18 years' service with the French Foreign Legion.
