Medical Matters
Chopin suffered from respiratory problems for most of his life. While on a recuperative holiday in Majorca, he began to cough up blood-flecked sputum. Three doctors were called, and tuberculosis was suspected. There is now some debate as to whether this was really what he had and whether it ultimately killed him, but Chopin was always in frail health, and died at just 39.
