Composer of the Week: Strauss

on BBC Radio 3

3: 1912-7. Anthony Burton 's third programme has as its centrepiece the Symphonic Fragment from Strauss's rarely heard ballet Josephs-Legende, written for
Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, in a recording specially made for the programme by the BBC Symphony
Orchestra, conductor Andrew Davis.
It is flanked by excerpts from two very different operas:
Edita Gruberova sings a virtuoso set piece aria from the neoclassical Ariadne aufNaxos, and Georg Solti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in a powerfully dramatic scene from the mystic Die Frau ohne Schatten. Repeated next Wednesday 12 midnight
