The Labeque Sisters
When sisters Katia and Marielle
Labeque simultaneously graduated with distinction from the Paris
Conservatoire, they made two wise decisions. One was to play together, which, surprisingly, they had not done before; and the other was to play the works of avant-garde composers. Within three weeks of leaving, they made their first recording, Messiaen's Visions de I'Amen, directed by the composer. Joan Bakewell talks to them about their musical education.

1: Java and Bali. Claude Debussy heard the gamelan in 1889, at the reconstructed Balinese village on show at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was only one of many composers who were inspired by the sound to translate the oriental atmosphere of Java and Bali into their own music. Britten drew similar inspiration from his visit to Bali.

(1797-1828) lain Burnside looks at the public and private faces of Schubert: his attempts to capture the Viennese opera audience, piano duets intended for intimate performance in a circle of friends, and chamber works he based on the melodies of his own songs. This first programme features two ways of catching a trout, Charlemagne's battle against the Moors in Spain, a sublime nocturne, and a four-handed passage through the storms of life.
