Russell Davies presents a history of jazz, from its earliest stirrings to the end of the millennium.
14: Jungle Music. When Duke
Ellington took up a residency at New York's Cotton Club in 1927, it swiftly brought him international fame. He made a virtue of the contractual necessity to accompany the club's exotic floor shows by developing a primitivist, growling style of jazz that he was comfortable calling jungle music. Since its first performance in Tallahassee in 1955, Carlisle Floyd 's opera has had countless stagings in the United
States. This new production at the Met is just the latest and is the work's first broadcast in the United
Kingdom. The action is set in New Hope Valley, Tennessee, and this story of mountain valley intolerance is related to that told in the Apocryphal Book of Susanna. Royd's word-setting combines the natural inflexions of speech with lyrical arias and music with a traditional
American sound.

Tonight's concert presents two contemporary legends of jazz - Max Roach and Cecil Taylor - in their first on-stage collaboration in Britain.
Following his performance in Jazz on 3's first programme a year ago, veteran drummer Max Roach returns to share the stage with the phenomenal pianist Cecil Taylor.
Since the start of his career in the bebop era, Max Roach has been consistently innovative as a percussionist, composer and dynamic performer. The restless energy, brilliant technique and unpredictability of Cecil Taylor have made him a legend in both the European and American avant garde, and he makes a welcome visit to
Britain for the first time in ten years. Also tonight, Jez Nelson rounds up the best of the latest CD releases.
