John Tomlinson
John Tomlinson is the only bass to have sung Wotan for ten consecutive years at the Bayreuth Festival, the centre of Wagnerian performance. The composer's grandson has said that his grandfather might have written the part of Wotan with Tomlinson in mind. The bass talks to
Joan Bakewell about the challenges and effects of singing Wagner, and the role of Wotan in particular.

4: Gloucester. William the Conqueror was responsible for the church that was to survive Henry VIII 's dissolution of the monasteries to become Gloucester Cathedral. Nearly 200 years later, singers from the cathedral got together with others from the neighbouring cities of Hereford and Worcester for the first of the annual music meetings that famously became known as the Three Choirs Festival.

Michael Oliver focuses on Britten's instrumental and orchestral music and suggests that, although Britten wrote far more vocal than non-vocal works, he turned to instrumental music when he felt the need to experiment in matters of form and technique. He argues that Britten seems increasingly to have used instruments without voices to express emotions that are too deep for words.

Cinema Apocalyptica
Five explorations by Ian Christie of how cinema has continued the literary and visual tradition of apocalypse, reflecting the 20th-century's own history of catastrophe and its search for meaning in an increasingly secular world through a variety of forms, both traditional and innovative.

The best known of these are Miller's Mad Max and Romero's Dead trilogy.
