John Tomlinson
John Tomlinson is the only bass to have sung Wotan for ten consecutive years at the Bayreuth Festival, the centre of Wagnerian performance. The composer's grandson has said that his grandfather might have written the part of Wotan with Tomlinson in mind. The bass talks to
Joan Bakewell about the challenges and effects of singing Wagner, and the role of Wotan in particular.
