2: Westminster Abbey. There is a strong musical tradition at Westminster Abbey, whose celebrated organists include Orlando Gibbons , John Blow and Henry Purcell. Purcell was buried in the abbey to the accompaniment of his own funeral music written for the death of Queen Mary, who died just a few months earlier. The abbey is known as a "royal peculiar", and although similar to a cathedral, it is not the seat of a bishop. Throughout its history, the abbey has played host to virtually all royal marriage, coronation and funeral ceremonies, including, most recently, that of Diana, Princess of Wales. War was widely interpreted in apocalyptic terms, which shaped its depiction in films such as J'Accuse and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and inaugurated a tradition of moralistic and prophetic spectacle in the cinema of the twenties and thirties.

The European premiere, given in 1997 at London's Barbican Hall, of Peter Maxwell Davies 's powerful and imaginative oratorio, dramatising the Old Testament story of suffering and innocence.
