Cathedrals
With Richard Baker.
2: Westminster Abbey. There is a strong musical tradition at Westminster Abbey, whose celebrated organists include Orlando Gibbons , John Blow and Henry Purcell. Purcell was buried in the abbey to the accompaniment of his own funeral music written for the death of Queen Mary, who died just a few months earlier. The abbey is known as a "royal peculiar", and although similar to a cathedral, it is not the seat of a bishop. Throughout its history, the abbey has played host to virtually all royal marriage, coronation and funeral ceremonies, including, most recently, that of Diana, Princess of Wales. "Everyman." according to Samuel Johnson , "is, or hopes to be, an Idler.", while for Oscar Wilde , "Work is the curse of the drinking classes." If work has rarely been popular as a central literary theme, representations of work nonetheless abound in pieces by novelists and theologians to philosophers and diarists. In his new anthology The
Oxford Book of Work, historian
Keith Thomas draws on these sources from across the centuries. He talks to Richard Coles about the contradictory and changing attitudes they reveal about this central experience of human life. Producer Lawrence Pollard
