John Tomlinson
In his youth, bass John Tomlinson used to perform with the local Methodist church choir and the Accrington Male Voice Choir. He talks to Joan Bakewell about his roots in the industrial community life of the postwar North West, and how he continues to perform religious works. Music includes excerpts from Verdi's Requiem, Handel's Messiah and Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle.

3: Christ Church, Oxford. Henry VIII laid the foundation of Christ Church by merging King's College with the see of Osney, forming the diocese of Oxford. The neighbouring Norman church of St Frideswide became both the college chapel and the cathedral of Oxford. Christ Church has had an associated choir school for many years, and it provides choristers for other Oxford colleges as well as its own choir, which has a distinguished line of choristers, as well as organists and Masters of the Music. Five explorations by Ian Christie , professor of film studies at the University of Kent, of how cinema has continued the literary and visual tradition of apocalypse, reflecting the 20th-century's own history of catastrophe and its search for meaning in an increasingly secular world through a variety of forms, both traditional and innovative.
3: Living with the Bomb. The threat of nuclear annihilation, linked with the tensions of the Cold War, encouraged a new apocalyptic fear in the fifties and sixties. This included popular science-fiction catastrophe and horror movies as well as anguished meditations on morality and Bergman's influential evocation of medieval apocalypse in The Seventh Seal.
