4: Japan. In Knightsbridge in the 1880s, Japan was all the rage. Everyone from Sloane Street to
Mayfair was wearing kimonos and performing tea ceremonies, and the islands of Japan were the fashionable decorating theme. Even WS Gilbert bought an ornamental sword, and when one day it crashed down off the wall of his study, he knew it was time to write a Japanese operetta.
