Martinu's surrealist opera Julietta (The Book of Dreams) in David Pountney 's new English translation and production for Opera North, from the Grand
Theatre, Leeds. Based on a play by Georges Neveux , it is set in a land where nothing is what it seems.
Micha, a young travelling bookseller, is haunted by the memory of a girl he once heard singing in a small seaside town. He returns to search for her and finds himself in a world that has no memory at all. Martinu captures his fantastic adventures in music bubbling over with rhythmic punch and beautiful melody.
