Vintage Years

on BBC Radio 3

The sixth of eight programmes in which David Mellor celebrates musical personalities from the past. Too Many Teachers? Never!
Clifford Curzon would have been 90 this year, but he would probably still have been studying, listening, practising, and learning from his predecessors, colleagues, rivals and proteges. This documentary portrait of a perfectionist includes contributions from his son Fritz Curzon, Nina Milkina, Murray Perahia, Raymond Leppard, violinist Paul Robertson of the Medici Quartet (who played with Curzon just before his death in 1982) and Callum Ross. Curzon and his wife, harpsichordist Lucille Wallace, are heard talking, and Curzon plays:
Liszt Petrarch Sonnet 104 (Annees de Pelerinage)
Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor (excerpt)
London Symphony Orchestra, conductor Anatole Fistoulari
Schubert Piano Sonata in D, D850 (2nd mvt)
Dvorak Piano Quintet in A (3rd mvt) Vienna Philharmonic Quartet
Mozart Piano Concerto No 20 in D minor, K466 (Finale)
English Chamber Orchestra, conductor Benjamin Britten
Lili Boulanger Cort ège; D'un Matin de Printemps
Yehudi Menuhin (violin)
Brahms Intermezzos: in E flat, Op 117 7 No 1; in E flat minor, Op 118 No 6 Producer Nick Morgan
