Richter the musician, who will always be a role model for others to emulate; and Slava the man, who suffered grievous loss under Stalin but had an ability to take off into realms of humour and fantasy. Including:

In the third of eight programmes,
Paul Oliver looks at the tradition of vocal quartets which anticipated the blues. He suggests that they were the link between the African-
American traditions of the late 19th century and the blues singers of this century, and examines the influence of groups such as the Dinwiddie Colored Quartet, the Excelsior
Quartette and the Norfolk Jazz Quartet. Repeated Friday 12.30am

The UK premiere of one of Vivaldi's most colourful operatic scores, apparently written in only five days to celebrate a wedding and first performed in 1719. The complex, three-act plot centres around the rivalry between the Romans and Latins during the time of the Roman Republic. This concert performance was given in July at the Royal College of Music in London.
La Serenissima, directors Adrian Chandler (violin) and Giulia Nuti (harpsichord)
Steve Jones returns with the programme that bridges the gulf between the arts and sciences.
In the first of four programmes, he explores the 16th century, which saw the first atlas, secular part songs by Thomas Tallis and the discovery by Gallileo that the acceleration due to gravity was the same for a feather and a stone.
