With this year's Aldeburgh October Festival concentrating on Haydn and Britten, Sean Rafferty talks to Donald Mitchell , chairman of the Britten Trustees , about the relationship between the two composers. He also meets Philip Langridge , who talks about Schubert's Winterreise, which he is currently tackling for the first time in a series of concerts around the country. With the opening of two exhibitions to celebrate his 60th birthday, painter Tom Philips reveals his fascination with abstracting the shapes of musical instruments and talks about his portrait of Harrison Birtwistle. Music includes Barber's
Adagio for Strings, Britten's Missa Brews, and Mozart's Flute Concerto in D at approximately 5.35.

In the second of four readings from his new biography of Salvador Dali, Ian Gibson recalls how the painter met his muse. Sexually repressed, Dali was partially liberated in the twenties by Gala, then the wife of the French poet Paul Eluard. But this Russian-born artistic adventuress, described by one contemporary as a "sibyl of the Steppes", would exact a terrible price for helping Dali to overcome his inhibitions.
