Christopher Page looks at the old Icelandic Edda - a collection of stories of giants and dwarves, prophecies and visions - with music by the ensemble Sequentia.

In the spring and summer of 1825, Franz Schubert travelled through Upper Austria, performing recitals and beginning to compose his Great C major Symphony. For the bicentenary of the composer's birth, the poet and German scholar David Constantine retraces this journey to explore the sources - physical and Romantic - of Schubert's passionate depiction of nature and to reflect on how this sunny summer break was to prepare him for the autumn and winter of his short life. With Simon Russell Beale as Schubert and singer Ian Bostridge , conductor Roger Norrington , Schubert scholars Elizabeth Norman McKay , Nicholas Rast and Marie-Agnes Dietrich and Romantic experts Phillip Brady and Peter Branscombe. Producer Beaty Rubens

By Ronald Hayman.
Derek Jacobi makes a rare radio appearance when he reprises his performance as the Swedish playwright August Strindberg , seen at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1995. In a burnt-out theatre, Strindberg directs a play about his disastrous first marriage to a baroness. As the actress Harriet Bosse (destined to become his third wife) rehearses the part of the baroness, she discovers that Strindberg is trying to write her life for her as well as her role.

The first of two programmes. Yemen is a country of extremes. From the green highlands in the medieval walled city at Bab al Yemen comes the sound of the almost extinct u'd of Sana'a (a lute). The shimmering oases of the Tihamah coast offer the contrasting lyres - simsimiyah and tumbarah.
