Four programmes in which
Roderic Dunnett explores operatic byways of Eastern Europe.
2: Love, Betrayal and Suicide
During the mid-19th century, social contradictions, the abuse of power, and the battle between the sexes were as much a theme for opera in Poland, Hungary and the Czech
Republic as they were in Italy. This programme focuses on the operatic heroes and heroines - young people caught up in situations they have little power to control, embroiled in conflict with cynical older ones who ought to know better. With excerpts from Stanislav Monluszko 's Halka,
Smetana's The Devil's Wall and Foerster's Eva.
