3: The Comic Touch
Light-hearted comic operas were a speciality of Czech composers, not least Smetana and Dvorak. Prague audiences still flock to hear them today, though some of the more popular comedies are only just beginning to filter through over here. Devils and charlatans, misery-gutses and self-deluding buffoons all crop up in this week's programme, spiced with an almost Mozartian charm, wit and panache. Including excerpts from Smetana's The Bartered Bride,
Blodek's In the Well, and Dvorak's The Cunning Peasant.
The second of three programmes in which the Hagen Quartet play
Schumann's three string quartets together with Mozart and Schubert's last three quartets.

Thomas Pynchon is one of America's most stylistically adventurous and reclusive writers, and the publication of his new novel Mason and Dixon is one of the literary events of the year. North and the slave-owning South.
Patrick Wright reviews the novel and Pynchon's literary career. And he talks to Henry Louis Gates , a leading scholar and writer on African-
American literature.
