3: The Comic Touch
Light-hearted comic operas were a speciality of Czech composers, not least Smetana and Dvorak. Prague audiences still flock to hear them today, though some of the more popular comedies are only just beginning to filter through over here. Devils and charlatans, misery-gutses and self-deluding buffoons all crop up in this week's programme, spiced with an almost Mozartian charm, wit and panache. Professor John Klier suggests that one way of understanding the former Soviet Union in transition is to reflect on the new Moscow currently under construction. He discovers that one thing Muscovites are up in arms against is a unique threat to the Russian capital called
Tseretelisation. Georgian-born sculptor Zurab Tsereteli has used his close links with the mayor of Moscow to capture virtually every commission for monumental sculpture.
