"The most satisfying British conductor since Beecham" was
Walter Legge 's description of Leslie Heward , who was born in 1897 and died on this day in 1943. Lyndon Jenkins explores this remarkable musician's wide-ranging recorded legacy, with several British orchestras and with soloists such as Benno Moiseiwitsch , Eileen Joyce , Maggie Teyte and Joan Hammond. The music includes the first movements of Mozart's Eine Kleine
Nachtmusik and Ireland's Piano
Concerto in its first-ever recording made in 1942, and a movement from Moeran's Symphony in G minor, recorded in January 1943, only a few months before Heward's death.

Paul Hindmarsh introduces the third of six concerts featuring the best brass band music from two pioneering periods - the early years of original brass band repertoire up to 1930 and the seventies, when many leading composers were writing for the medium again. Today the BNFL Band, with conductor Richard Evans , frame a colourful work from 1976 by John McCabe with music in romantic style from earlier this century: a transcription of a French military-band overture of 1912 by Guillaume Balay , and a three-movement symphonic work by the English composer Percy Fletcher.

Quartet competition. Held last month at Goldsmiths' Hall, London, it featured young quartets from all over the world. Beethoven's String
Quartet in F minor, Op 95 is played by the Belcea Quartet , who won third prize, and his String Quartet in F, Op 135 is played by the Castagneri Quartet from France, who were runners-up.

Ivan Hewett previews a fly-on-the-wall television series about conductor Mark Wigglesworth and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Hewett also pays a visit to rehearsals of A Bed of Arrows, an original piece of music theatre drawn from the Hindu epic The Mahabharata, and the programme takes a look at the way composers have used particular spaces as inspiration for their pieces.

Mozart's first great operatic success, composed when he was 14 years old, follows the traditional pattern of noble characters, heroic deeds and long set-piece arias. At its premiere it ran for six hours and was so well received that 21 further performances followed. Mitridate was then forgotten until this century. This performance was recorded at the Mozart Week in Salzburg in January. Sung in Italian.
