Umberto Giordano's second-best-known opera (after
Andrea Chenier ) has never been broadcast from the Met before, and has not been staged there for more than 70 years. Fedora is based on a melodrama by Sardou, and is named after its flawed heroine. The Russian princess Fedora Romanov swears revenge on Count Loris Ipanov , the man who shot her fiance, only to find herself falling in love with him. Mirella Freni takes the title role, with Placido Domingo as Loris - a part sung at the opera's premiere almost a century ago (and its Met premiere in 1906) by Enrico Caruso. And pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet makes a Met stage debut. Last broadcast in the season.
