Sidney Bechet was hailed as a genius by Ernest Ansermet in 1919 but later jailed in England and France, and deported from both countries.
Yet this unique stylist of the soprano sax and clarinet ended his life a hero of France. In this six-part series, Russell Davies traces one of the most picaresque careers in jazz. 2: Wild Cat Blues
After being deported from London for assault, Bechet landed back in New
York where, in 1923, he made his first recording.
