Music from the Red Sea Shores

on BBC Radio 3

The first of two programmes. Yemen is a country of extremes. From the green highlands in the medieval walled city at Bab al Yemen comes the sound of the almost extinct u'd of Sana'a (a lute). The shimmering oases of the Tihamah coast offer the contrasting lyres - simsimiyah and tumbarah.
