A musical radio play by Herman Rechberger with Neil Hardwick as the Narrator
MAGNUS LINDBERG (piano)
HELJA ANGERVO (mezzo-sop) and THE AUTHOR (unconventional instruments) '
If you have ever thought that the 'contemporary music' scene must be something of a racket, this play will confirm your worst suspicions and more. If you live in a flat and play the piano as well (or have a neighbour who does), so much the better. This Finnish Radio production, by Inari Teinila , won the RAI prize for music programmes at last year's Prix Italia competition. (Finnish Radio recording)

The death of Chairman Mao has had a profound effect on education in China. The policy which had affected the lives of 250 million students and nine million teachers was almost overnight reversed by the new leadership. John Gardner , Reader in Government at Manchester University, visited China in February and compares what he saw then with what had been happening in schools and universities under the Gang of Four.

compiled by Elizabeth Troop from The Intimate Notebook of George Sand translated by MARIE JENNEY HOWE
With Jane Lapotaire as George Sand
From 1836 to 1839 - years filled with elation, depression and overwork — George Sand kept a notebook addressed to a Dr Piffoel. This ' Professor of Botany and Psychology ' was in fact one of her masculine alter egos. She was then in her mid-30s, angry about society's attitude to women and fascinated by educational, literary and political questions. The music of the young Liszt was some consolation.
With JENNY TWICGE and JOHN BULL
Directed by JOHN THEOCHARIS (Jane Lapotaire is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company)
