'It is the hardest task that can be. to pen the manner of artificial gracing an upper part,' wrote Roger North in the 1720s. Peter Holmnn introduces some surviving examples of the 18th-century art of ' gracing ' or ornamentation, applied to sonatas by Corelli and his pupil Geminiani.
