The death of Chairman Mao has had a profound effect on education in China. The policy which had affected the lives of 250 million students and nine million teachers was almost overnight reversed by the new leadership. John Gardner , Reader in Government at Manchester University, visited China in February and compares what he saw then with what had been happening in schools and universities under the Gang of Four.
