The Basques are one of the most ancient, and yet least known, of the peoples of Europe. Their long-standing struggle for -autonomy was recognised by Madrid on New Year's day, after a campaign which had occasionally flared into violence.
Douglas Gilford , whose department at the University of St Andrews is one of the few where Basque History and Language are studied, examines the history of this people and discusses how their movement for autonomy compares with similar movements in Europe today.
