In New York, about 20 years ago. Dr Charlotte Friend isolated a virus which had developed leukaemia. Recently, using Friend's virus to induce blood cancer in mice, researchers have been able to discover a mechanism by which the virus alters the genetic material that controls the manufacture of blood cells in the host. Dr Paul Harrison. of the Royal Beatson Memorial Hospital, Glasgow, describes how the use of Friend's virus may lead to a molecular description of normal blood cell formation, and ultimately to an understanding of the action of tumour viruses in animals, and perhaps even in man.
