Dialogues des Carmelites by Francis Poulenc
The second in a series of three operas set at the time of the Revolution. The libretto, by the Catholic poet. GEORGES BERNAnos, is based on historical fact and concerns a group of Carmelite nuns who defied orders to disband and suffered martyrdom as a result. In the opera it Is the spiritual drama which primarily occupies the composer's attention, and in particular the struggle of Blanche to overcome fear and come to terms with herself.
