The first in a series of three operas set at the time of the Revolution. The libretto by LUIGI illica, who was one of Puccini's librettists, is based on the life of Andre 1 Chdnier, a distinguished French poet of the 18th century. At first an ardent supporter of the Revolution, his idealism and liberal views later led to his death on the guillotine only days before the end of the Reign of Terror.
