Andrea Chenier by Umberto Giordano
The first in a series of three operas set at the time of the Revolution. The libretto by LUIGI illica, who was one of Puccini's librettists, is based on the life of Andre 1 Chdnier, a distinguished French poet of the 18th century. At first an ardent supporter of the Revolution, his idealism and liberal views later led to his death on the guillotine only days before the end of the Reign of Terror.

7.0 The Prisoners
A series of nine programmes 8: Prison and the Community
Many large old prisons are situated in built-up residential areas. Yet they have surprisingly little contact with the local community, in spite of the large numbers of discharged prisoners who will come out to live and work in the neighbourhood. What are the reasons for this ' remoteness ' from the community? How do residents feel about the prison and its inmates? Presented by LARRY HELD

by Ken Whitmore
'Sir Gilbert was the original Grandfather of the pinstripe Mafia. Even before Redcliffe-Maud was dreamed of, he realised that the beauty of a three-tier local authority with split functions is that nobody has the slightest idea of who's responsible for what and the scope for jiggery-pokery is infinite. One of the minor robber barons, you might say. But a forerunner of great moguls like me - and you if you learn to place your field carefully.'
