BBC Symphony Orchestra, leader Bela Dekany, conductor Pierre Boulez
Sir Lennox Berkeley says:
'Pierre Boulez dominates this concert, appearing as both conductor and composer. It is, in fact, his last appearance as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra - though he now becomes one of the orchestra's Chief Guest Conductors. Pli selon pli, tonight's Boulez work, is a title that almost defies translation: the nearest one can get to it, I think, is "fold by fold," meaning (one supposes) that the music unfolds or unravels itself progressively. If anyone is capable of revealing this process it will be Boulez himself. His performances are always remarkable for precision and clarity.'

A report from Venice presented by John Maddox
What are quasars? Do black holes exist, and if so, where? How did the Universe begin and how will it end? These were some of the virtually eternal questions that confronted astronomers and cosmologists attending a conference held in Venice last week to celebrate the 60th birthday of Sir Fred Hoyle.
