Direct from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Phyllis Bryn-Julson (soprano), John Constable (piano), Hugo D'Alton (mandolin), Freddie Phillips (guitar)
Swingle II
BBC Symphony Orchestra, leader Bela Dekany, conductor Pierre Boulez

Sir Lennox Berkeley says:
'Pierre Boulez dominates this concert, appearing as both conductor and composer. It is, in fact, his last appearance as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra - though he now becomes one of the orchestra's Chief Guest Conductors. Pli selon pli, tonight's Boulez work, is a title that almost defies translation: the nearest one can get to it, I think, is "fold by fold," meaning (one supposes) that the music unfolds or unravels itself progressively. If anyone is capable of revealing this process it will be Boulez himself. His performances are always remarkable for precision and clarity.'
