Futility by WILLIAM GERHARDIE abridged in ten parts by ELIZABETH BRADBURY
Read by Roger Rees (1) This novel on Russian themes was written shortly after the First
World War and published in 1922. It was Gerhardie's first book and he used his own wartime experiences in Russia at the time of the Revolution. It is a story of unrequited love between a young
Englishman and Nina, one of three sisters; though the author points out that, 'the "I" of the book is not me.'

Over two million people donate blood every year in Britain. What happens to all this blood? How is it processed and used?

Derek Parker follows the trail of an average 'pinta' from Donation Centre to laboratory, looking at the early history of blood transfusion on the way, and examining the present state of the service.

Helping him follow the trail are Dr Tom Davies, Director of the North London Regional Centre of the Blood Transfusion Service, members of the staff at the West London Centre, and various blood donors- including actor and comedian, Kenneth Williams.
