The English Stage Company began its controversial occupation of the Royal Court
Theatre in London 25 years ago. George Devine , the first artistic director, pointed the way to a ' writers' theatre ' with Look Back in Anger by John Osborne , in 1956. Since then, the Company has proved a testing ground for both new and foreign plays, a leader of taste, and an opponent of censorship.
