Opera Go Round from Glasgow to Thurso
Seven singers, a piano and a carpet are the basic ingredients of Scottish Opera's small touring company, Opera Go
Round. Their spring tour of the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland reaches the parts that other tourers tremble at.
Joyce MacMillan catches up with them as their bus arrives on Islay in the Inner Hebrides on a journey which takes in village halls, schools and even the odd distillery, and the opera? What better than
Verdi's Macbeth.

The independence of the judiciary is a tremendous inheritance we got from British rule. It is there to protect the ordinary citizens against the all-powerful state when it comes to fundamental rights.
(BARRISTER, MALAYSIA)
You can't be complacent. There will always be times that are not as good for the rule of law as other times are. The important thing is to preserve the yardstick and sometimes to be conscious that we 're not doing well enough.
(COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY
GENERAL)
The panoply of justice has proved one of the most abiding legacies of the British Empire. From a magistrates court in Barbados to the Supreme Court in Kuala Lumpur Nick Clarke finds that, though the procedure and the wigs and gowns are familiar, cracks are appearing in this great legal edifice. Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom.
If you don 't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But man there's 's no boundary line to art. (CHARLIE PARKER ) Charlie Parker was one of the major innovators of modern jazz. He was also an alcoholic and a heroin addict. When he died in 1955 his age was estimated at between 50 and 60. He was, in fact, 34 years old.
A few days after his death, the words 'Bird Lives' were found scrawled on a wall. The process of turning Parker into a myth had begun.
