Six programmes

David Jones looks at some celebrated fiddles which have enlivened scientific history. The Piltdown Man duped scientists for 30 years. Part of the reason was that the bones were deemed so precious that no one was allowed to get at them to do proper tests. Another fraud was Grigor Mendel. His experiments on pea-breeding founded the science of genetics but they are too good to be true. Mendel knew the results he wanted - and made sure he got them!

I think to the average
Dalesman who's lived here all his life it's just the outside garden of his home, as you might say. He doesn't bother a lot about it. But personally, for me, there's nu other place in the whole world like it. I like its Jells and hills. I like to be up on the fells. I like the solitude.
The landscape of the Yorkshire Dales has become a familiar world to the many admirers of the James Herriot stories. This is a portrait of one of the most beautiful and remote parts of that landscape, Upper
Wensleydale, with the voices of some of the people who live there. Research MARIE HARTLEY and JOAN INGILBY
