Within a strictly maintained hierarchy, you might start as Wag Lad but you aspired to become a Waggoner, with responsibility for the other lads and the horses. Jack Danby , with the help of some Waggoners, recalls the simple but often rewarding life on the farm before the advent of labour-saving machinery.
