The Waggoners

on BBC Radio 4 FM

'You daren't go begging of them to 'ire you; they allus asked you; you didn't ask them.'
The farm labourers in the East Riding of Yorkshire were, until about 40 years ago, hired by the farmers in the market place. Within a strictly maintained hierarchy, you might start as Wag Lad but you aspired to become a Waggoner, with responsibility for the other lads and the horses. Jack Danby , with the help of some Waggoners, recalls the simple but often rewarding life on the farm before the advent of labour-saving machinery.
