by Shelagh Delaney

Joan Littlewood, the dynamic producer of Theatre Workshop, first directed A Taste of Honey at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East in 1958, where it was hailed as an escape from the middle-class vacuum of West End theatre. When the production moved into Wyndham's Theatre, there was an enthusiastic first night with eight curtain calls, and 19-year-old Shelagh Delaney became famous overnight.
